January in Warsaw has a colour palette approved by the finance department.

Sky: grey. Pavement: grey. Buildings: several historically significant shades of grey. The sun appears as a rumour circulated by people who travelled recently.

The city keeps working

Trams arrive. Cafés open. Children wear enough layers to survive a minor expedition. Somebody is still running beside the Vistula, either through discipline or a personal dispute with comfort.

Warsaw does not perform winter beautifully in the Scandinavian sense. There is no collective decision to place a candle in every window and call darkness design. The city simply continues.

The reward is attention

When light is scarce, small things become visible. A warm bakery. The yellow rectangle of a tram. Snow that remains clean for eleven minutes. The relief of entering a building where radiators have not been subjected to energy-management innovation.

The city is easier to love in May. January makes the relationship more credible.

Grey is not hopeless. Grey is Warsaw saying the work remains.

Pressure changes shape. The work remains.
