Stay Useful began with a frustration. Pressure is often discussed either as a heroic test of character or as a wellness problem. Real work is usually less dramatic and more demanding. People still need to think, communicate, decide, support others and complete useful actions while the situation remains unclear.

The first edition will be released on 1 August 2026. It is a paperback, published by PressureReady, and it has taken the ordinary untidy route from manuscript to physical object: structure, examples, cuts, typography, paper, cover files, proofing, corrections and the uncomfortable point at which improvement must stop long enough for the book to exist.

What the book is trying to do

This is not a book about becoming fearless, charismatic or permanently calm. Fear, fatigue, uncertainty, irritation and overload are normal human responses. The useful question is what can still be done well while those responses are present.

The book starts with the person because pressure first appears in attention, tone and judgement. It then moves through leadership, teams and the systems underneath them. The practical tools are deliberately small: sort facts from assumptions, identify fear and noise, choose the first useful action, make ownership clear and set the next review point. Under strain, a question that returns is more valuable than an elegant method nobody remembers.

The question behind the title

The title is not a demand for endless availability. It is not an invitation to become the person who saves every broken arrangement. Useful behaviour leaves the situation a little clearer, safer or more manageable. Sometimes that means acting. Sometimes it means refusing a reckless shortcut, saying that the deadline is no longer credible or preventing a team from receiving another wave of senior anxiety.

The book is also honest about the less flattering side of pressure. Competent people can become rigid, impatient, theatrical or difficult. Leaders can mistake forwarding concern for transparency. Teams can appear resilient while a few dependable people are quietly being spent. The point is not moral perfection. It is recognising the pattern early enough to choose something better.

The first book of a wider argument

Stay Useful is the first part of a trilogy. Impossible by Friday moves from the individual to the organisation trying to deliver when pressure, process and priorities collide. We Can’t Keep Doing This turns toward the system that repeatedly creates the same pressure and depends on rescue to hide the weakness.

The widening structure matters. Personal discipline is necessary, but it cannot compensate forever for missing authority, impossible portfolios or weak systems. At the same time, organisational reform does not remove the need for a person to behave well on a difficult morning. The books are connected because the levels are connected.

We are proud of the book, aware of its imperfections and ready for it to begin the part of its life no publisher controls: the part in which readers decide whether any of it is useful.

Pressure changes shape. The work remains.
