Leadership is often misdescribed as inspiration when it is more often an act of clarification. Good leaders reduce ambiguity at the right moment, protect sequence, state trade-offs plainly and make sure the burden does not slide by default toward the same dependable people every single time.

This matters because systems naturally drift toward hidden concentration. The most capable person becomes the unofficial fallback. The calmest person absorbs conflict. The most diligent person keeps the notes, the memory and the continuity. An organisation can mistake that pattern for resilience for a very long time.

If the dependable people were unavailable tomorrow, would the process still work or would the organisation begin improvising?

The correction is not to become less demanding. It is to become more explicit. Name ownership. Record conditions. Distinguish routine work from rescue work. Ask whether a successful outcome depended on design or on personal sacrifice. The answer is often more revealing than the performance dashboard.

Leadership, in other words, is not only about what a team can survive. It is about whether the same team could repeat the result without paying for it twice.
