Compassion Without Capacity Is Delayed Cruelty

People often speak as though Europe must choose between human feeling and border control.

That is a false choice. A border is not an insult. It is how a political community defines responsibility. Without that structure, empathy becomes ungoverned and eventually self-defeating, because the backlash arrives exactly where the state failed to stay credible.

The dignified position is not open everything or shut everything. It is to know who is entering, under what rules, at what scale, with what obligations, and with what realistic plan for integration or return.

There is nothing compassionate about pretending limits do not exist and then leaving the consequences to overwhelmed local services and increasingly brittle neighbourhoods.
