Before Winter: Buy Batteries and Lower Expectations is one of those thoughts that starts as a joke and stays because reality keeps volunteering evidence.

There are phases of life when the grand theory matters less than the daily arrangement. Weather, transport, food, sleep, a tolerable view and one reliable routine can influence judgement more than people like to admit. Human beings are still embarrassingly physical creatures.

I do not mind that truth. In fact, I find it comforting. It means recovery does not always require revelation. Sometimes it requires lunch. Sometimes it requires lower expectations. Sometimes it requires walking outside before turning every minor inconvenience into a constitutional crisis.

A lot of adulthood is really just infrastructure management in disguise: keeping enough order around yourself that your better judgment remains available when it is needed. This is less glamorous than personal mythology, but considerably more useful.

And when that modest arrangement works, even briefly, it produces a kind of calm that feels disproportionate to its size. Which is probably why we keep trying.

Pressure changes shape. The work remains.
